This week in social media news: Instagram tests new product launch features and rolls out their “Restrict” feature, Twitter deals with some outages and Facebook launches Threads for Instagram. Instagram Testing Product Launches According to a blog on Instagram Business, the platform is testing new ways to inform users of upcoming product launches. Their idea: a product launch sticker in Instagram Stories and a product launch tag in feed posts. “Set reminders for the launch date, preview product details and buy as soon as a product is available without leaving Instagram.”– Instagram Source: Instagram Business “From checkout to shopping from creators, this is part of our ongoing investment to make it easier for people to shop,” Instagram says. Only certain brands in the US are part of this beta test. Click here to see the list so you can check it out. Instagram Rolls Out Restrict Feature In July, Instagram started testing out their “Restrict” feature that allows users to shadow ban comments on their posts. Source: Instagram In a blog post on Wednesday, Instagram announced that this feature is now available to everyone. Users can restrict accounts and effectively hide any comments, messages and notifications from that user. This is basically an anti-bullying tool that allows users to “quietly” protect their account from unwanted interactions. Here’s how it works according to Instagram: “Once Restrict is enabled, comments on your posts from a person you have restricted will only be visible to that person. You can choose to view the comment by tapping “See Comment;” approve the comment so everyone can see it; delete it; or ignore it. You won’t receive any notifications for comments from a restricted account.” Instagram will also send any Direct Messages from a Restricted account to Message Request and users will not get any notifications of these messages. Users will be able to Unrestrict accounts at any time. You shouldn’t be having any problems now. Facebook Launches Instagram Threads Threads is “a new camera-first messaging app that helps you stay connected to your close friends.” Source: Instagram As a companion app to Instagram, Threads only allows users on your Close Friends list to connect with you. It automatically opens to your camera so users can send photos and videos as well as chats. Think Snapchat, but Instagram version. Threads has a Status and Auto Status feature that can inform your Close Friends what you’re up to. Unlike Snapchat, there is no map or location and the focus is what you’re doing and not where.
