The boost of awareness you can get from TikTok for your business or personal brand is immeasurable. But how do you get cut through on a crowded platform, and create videos that will generate views?

The core principles of running a successful TikTok are simple. You must create high-quality and engaging content. In other words, you want people to like your videos, share them and talk about them—if users are compelled to do that, it will boost their visibility. Here are a few tips to keep top of mind if you’re trying to boost the engagement of your content.

1. Keep it short and sweet

Yes, TikTok allows videos of up to 10 minutes in length—but on the whole, short-form videos perform much better. The TikTok algorithm favors videos with a high completion rate, meaning if people are compelled to watch your entire video, it’ll do much better. Try to put everything you want to show your audience in videos no longer than 30 seconds. Videos of up to 60 seconds can work at a push, but make sure the content within it is highly engaging.

2. Start strong

In addition to keeping your videos short, they need to kick and punch right from the start. If you create a short-form video that grabs users’ attention in the first few seconds, your video has a much higher chance of performing well.

Weave in a hook that will make it impossible for viewers to scroll away. This could be a verbal hook, meaning you say the hook directly to camera (for instance, ‘Watch me clean my room in 30 seconds’); it could appear as on-screen text (‘The biggest mistake people make when cooking pasta’), or it could be an engaging visual hook.

For example, a TikTok video showing actual footage of Utah Beach in Normandy, alongside WWII photos, brought the past and present together in a single frame. The video is hard to scroll away from, because you want to see how the space has changed over time.

3. Use relevant hashtags

Hashtags. Hashtags. Hashtags. Did I mention hashtags?Relevant hashtags are a discovery tool for users interested in specific topics. This means users will find your quality content fast, which is exactly what you want.An original creator, Mauro Littera, an Italian influencer, effectively promoted StudioSuits' latest men's green suit collection. He used a creative caption highlighting the suits' elegance. Yet, he used careful strategy to include hashtags such as #menwithstyle, #menwithclass, #menfashion, and #gentleman.

These hashtags helped Mauro’s video reach a broader audience interested in men's fashion. The result? His video enhanced engagement and drove thousands of views.

4. Post at the right time

Timing is critical on TikTok. According to Hopper, the best time to post on TikTok is mid-week between 10 AM and 11 AM—but this will vary depending on your geographical location and your target audience’s location, as well as when your niche is most active. Posting during your audiences' peak time will have a big impact on your views, so it’s important to pay attention to user patterns, and do what works best for your niche.

5. Be consistent

Consistency is key to staying on the right side of TikTok’s algorithm. Having a video go big can be a little like winning the lottery, and the more videos you make, the more tickets you’re buying. In other words: posting regularly will increase your chances of being featured widely on the FYP, and favored by the algorithm. But remember, quality over quantity matters—posting too often without good content will do more harm than good.

6. Try trends

Besides having consistent, high-quality videos, it can be beneficial to jump on the “trends train”—think a trending video format, CapCut template, for audio. Following trends and being a part of them can build relatability with your audience, and give an additional boost to your TikTok efforts. But keep in mind: it’s key that you jump on trends in a timely manner, and that the trends you jump on make sense with what you’re promoting. This example by Fusion Medical Staffing, a traveling nursing agency, works well: they brought their whole team on board to participate in the ‘we’re xxxx’ trend, and created a video that felt relevant, and gave an insight into their behind the scenes.

7. Engage with your audience

Engagement goes both ways. Your audience gives you views, comments, and shares. In return, you should always do your best to respond to their comments. Gradually, this will help you build community, which will slowly and surely increase your audience size.

8. Collaborate with others

Don’t shy away from collaborating with fellow TikTokers. Collaboration allows you to share your valuable content with an audience you might not have reached otherwise, and can look like anything from challenges to guest appearances to singing duets. For best results, seek out creators within your niche. For instance, if you’re in a nutrition field, find a personal trainer to team up so you can complement each other’s expertise.

9. Use TikTok Ads

Like most platforms, TikTok offers a way to advertise your content, and you can publish content automatically. If you really wish to boost your audience and get more views and followers, TikTok Ads can help.Just be sure to follow TikTok’s advertising guidelines and Terms of Service. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, TikTok had a massive ad cleanup on the platform. They removed around 5.7 million ads due to various violations.Wrapping upGetting more views on TikTok doesn’t just happen automatically. You have to take a variety of factors into account to ensure success on the platform. Combining strategic planning, consistency, and creativity will give you a head start.
