October 20 Update

Meta News:

What happened:

Meta has released new features for Reels ads.

What this means for you + clients:

Some of these features include:

  • Collection ads: feature one large video or image with smaller accompanying images
  • Multi-destination Reels carousel ads: direct people to different product or landing pages
  • Swipe left: allows people to quickly and easily learn about and shop the products they are interested in

They've also expanded their Advantage+ creative suite explaining:

  • Creative optimizations: available features include automatic templates that convert non-9:16 media to 9:16 media, 3D motion and depth, aspect ratio variance, and image and video enhancements including filters to sharpen color and improve video resolution.
  • Music: Now, all advertisers on Facebook and Instagram, delivering to iOS devices, can source, select, and add music to their single image Reels ads during the campaign creation process to foster engagement and better results.

Threads News:

What happened:

Threads rolls out an edit post option and voice notes feature and appears to be working on a direct messaging feature.

What this means for you + client:

Threads usage is still on the decline, with app downloads not even in the top 50 last month. However, they're still launching new features in an attempt to increase usage.

One welcome feature is the option to edit your post. To edit your post, click the three dots in the top right corner and you'll see the edit option. You can only edit posts within 5 minutes of posting them (great if you're a social media manager who notices a typo right away). Users will see an edit icon next to the time stamp of posts that have been altered.

Threads is also rolling out what they are calling "Voice Threads" that appear as sound wave attachments in posts.

It also appears that Threads is testing branded content tags. While app usage still hasn't climbed back up to when it originally launched, paid parternships may be an interesting avenue for brands to take on the app (especially while there re still no ads on the app).

TikTok News:

What happened:

TikTok introduces an "Out of Phone" offering that lets partners and brands leverage TikTok content beyond the platform - to billboards and kiosks and in cinemas, bars, restaurants, automobiles, airports, gas stations, retail stores, and more.

What this means for you + clients:

This is an effort to bring TikTok content into the real world. Like TikTok says, "That means brands can kick off a campaign on TikTok, generate authentic growth within communities and creators, and then amplify their work onto billboards* reaching new and far-ranging audiences."

What happened:

TikTok announced that soon, all eligible videos will have auto-captions by default.

What this means for you + clients:

This move is an effort to be more inclusive as well as to break down language barriers.

What happened:

TikTok and Disney are partnering up and Disney will become a TikTok Pulse Premiere publisher.

What this means for you + clients:

Disney100 will be a content hub where fans will be able to "watch videos from across Disney's brands, create their own videos with Disney music and effects, play daily Disney trivia, and collect and trade "Character Cards" of favorite characters to win unique profile frames to show off their fandom."

It's doubtful that any of this audio will be licensed for brands to use, so this update is primarily for your personal enjoyment.

However, this partnership also announced that Disney will become a TikTok Pulse Premiere publisher. This means that advertisers can deliver ads adjacent to Disney content on TikTok's For You feed.

X News:

What happened:

X is continuing to build out their features around communities, introducing membership questions to gain entry into a group.

What this means for you + clients:

Similar to private Facebook groups, community admins can now add an entry question to help them gauge whether or not users will be good contributors. This feature will help filter out any spammers but can also be used to create more exclusive communities. Maybe it's a private group for your email subscribers or a community for women in business to network. The possibilities are endless and this new feature will help moderators foster their community.

YouTube News:

What happened:

YouTube has launched a bunch of new features for better mobile playback as well as features for creators.

What this means for you + clients:

Some of the user-friendly updates include:

  • Tap and hold to increase the playback speed to 2x
  • Going back to the place you started using the scrub bar will indicate your original spot with a vibration
  • Toggle on Stable Volume to reduce sudden differences in volume throughout the video
  • Find a song by humming, singing, or playing a song
  • YouTube is combining the Library page and account page into a You page that includes previously watched videos, playlists, downloads and purchases plus account and channel information

For creators:

  • When a creator says, "like and subscribe" in their video, YouTube will highlight the buttons to act as a visual cue
  • Rotating top comments to better engage with your community
